Unboxing, Assembling & Test Driving my new Camp Chef SmokePro Stainless DLX Pellet Grill Smoker
Check out my new food-related channel at http://www.Youtube.com/Aristogrub.
If you are considering one of the many pellet grills and smokers on the market today I invite you to join me as I walk through the unboxing, assembly and testing of my new Camp Chef SmokePro Stainless DLX Pellet Grill, which is now being marketed as the “Windwood”. This pellet grill is very similar to (and some would argue a clone of) units sold by and under the names Traeger, Green Mountain Grills, Cabela, Rec Tec, Yoder Smokers, Mak Grills, Fast Eddy’s Cookshack grills, Grilla Grills Silverbac, Memphis Pro and many others! BTW, you could buy THREE of the Camp Chef SmokePro or Windwood grills for the price of the new Traeger Timberline!
After much Googling for info on the grill I landed on an excellent forum and on this fantastic thread: http://www.letstalkbbq.com/index.php?topic=4737.0 I was so inspired by the review that I decided to start my relationship with our new grill by conducting the same tests that were conducted in the thread. The thread’s poster “smokeasaurus” continued far beyond my first few tests, so if you are considering ANY pellet grill I suggest that you take a look at this thread and consider joining the http://www.letstalkbbq.com forum while you are at it.
The Camp Chef SmokePro DLX pellet grill is sold by a number of retailers and online through several more. I purchased mine through the link below. This grill is also sold in two versions: One made entirely of black painted steel and the other with a few stainless steel body parts. I played with the black steel unit at a local retail store and was put-off by the flimsy lid, but the stainless steel version felt much more rigid, so I knew that’s the one I wanted.
Also, the hopper cleanout is a new feature on this grill, so if you are looking at one of these in person make sure that there is a knob and chute on the side and back of the pellet hopper. Likewise, earlier versions have only one drain hole beneath the hopper lid. Nothing will make your expensive pellets worthless as quickly as water in the pellets, so this is an excellent upgrade.

Since posting my video another Youtuber has posted a great side by side comparison of the Traeger and the Camp Chef SmokePro: https://youtu.be/QeQSpyR5xuQ

We have used this at least 4 times a week since we received it a month ag MyBest.Kitchen Temperature control is spot-on even on long cooks. We throw a welding blanket over it in the cold and it doesn't burn through pellets. Fantastic smoky flavor and is easy to clean.
Completely unrelated…. What watch are you wearing in this video?
I keep my pellets in a plastic tote. No water
I was almost going to get one of them pellet smokers before I purchased the one I currently have my offset I forget the company who made it but that's irrelevant nice smoker
I posted about my Davy Crockett being super loud (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCZUrpsQQr4) Your grill sounds super quiet with no noise from the motor or auger. Have you noticed any loud grindy noises from the motor or auger since you've had it?
Dat food look like nigga cook it ..I ain't know white folks BBQ like dat ..dis is a top notch video very point focused he ain't wandered off da subject of da grill much ..I normally don't hit da like button on white boy video ..but I'mma hook my guy up WID one for show
2020 and its still relevant. i just bought my DLX. thanks for a very informative for dunnys video. great job.
Greetings from Nova Scotia, Canada! I had been leaning towards Camp Chef (or Pit Boss) and you did a great job of making my mind up! Looking forward to some smoked seafood! Take Care!!
My gas grill has served me well for over 10 years. Its time to raise the bar to a pellet grill and this one would be my first choice for the price two family members have REC-TEC but i aint spending that kind of money. Great Video!
OMG you buy a new grill smoker that's worth almost $900 dollars and the first thing you cook is toasted bread and biscuits? Come on dude, for real? 🤣
Just set this up and I’m such a beginner when it comes to owning and operating a smoker. I’m glad I turned to this video and glad you broke it down to the nitty gritty. I’m recommending this smoker and this video to anyone I know that’s interested.
Fantastic video man, still helpful in 2019… I'm definitely getting a camp chef..
That's a sweet grill. I just ordered one myself. Thanks for the informative video. Nicely done sir.
Great video just found your Channel, I bought one last summer and had a great time with it smoking about everything you can think of. About the only thing I didn't smoke was a turkey but I'm thinking about doing this summer. Camp Chef is a great smoker!
Put a handful of pellets in the burner pot to start up faster.
I can't believe you left your new smoker in the rain
Great video !!!! All I needed to know, explained in detail without crappy music with awesome insight !!! Major kudos to this video !! I'm buying this baby thanks to you !
I look forward to watching all your Arisocob videos. Watched a couple already and already picked up a few pointers.
Have a Camp Chef Pro XT on the way. Your video is very helpful to me as I know nothing about the unit other than the descirption on the sight I purchased it from. The XT is a recently released pellet smoker from Camp Chef. Not sure what the latest up grades are, but believe the "brains" of the unit have somewhat been improved. This model may improve temperature holding which I've read as somewhat of a problem with some pellet grills. Just my guess, as I'm a rookie pellet smoker. I have been into BBQ smoking for a few decades, though. Thanks again, your vedio helped a lot.
Good job posting this review. A lot of good information from the "every-man" point of view and I appreciate the follow up video explaining how Camp-Chef resolved your issue with the damage.
I bought one through Amazon and it came dented to hell and back. I went to sportsman's warehouse to get my next one, I'll be unboxing tomorrow hopefully no dents.
Is it possible to grill on a grill like this one without using pellets? Does all the heat comes from the heating rod only? I wonder how can it produce temperatures of over 400 degrees
looking at getting a smoker/grill like this…im just wondering…does it cook burgers and steaks well? like on a standard grill without having a separate "searing" side like the camp chef woodwind grill
I am looking to buy one. Do you have to empty the ash tray in the middle of cooking several times? How is it at keeping temps? Did you do any modifications to it? For example adding a gasket to the cooking chamber? If you leave it outside. How rusty does it get? Being a thin metal. Do i have to worry about it rusting through?
Is it possible to do a whole turkey on one? how long will it take roughly ? I know go by the internal temp but how long is usual for a 10- 12 pound bird? Thank you. great video.
Did you’re come with a cover?
My wife is going to get me one for Christmas. Do you think the one with the stainless steel cover is better than the one with just the metal cover? I want the best one, without going too high in price. Great information in your video. Can you put aluminum foil of the drip plate or will it just burn up?
Great mouthwatering review!
What’s the spray you were using few times for? I don’t remember hearing you mentioning it.
This sounds stupid, but I'm trying to put mine together, the handle comes with a "handle deflector". I can't figure out where this goes!!
I did a lot of research and i decided to go Camp chef smokepro Se. I did the 30 min burn in then i shut it down and then proceeded to to the rub on my ribs and fire it back up on high smoke and OMG this thing is amazing the smoke penetration was min 1/4 inch on all sides. I did 3 hours high smoke , turned it to 250 and did 1 hour wrapped with butter , honey and brown sugar then 1 hour unwrapped with bbq sauce. I would recommend this grill/smoker to anybody even if they wanted to compare it to the others on the market.
I bought one last summer. Best thing I ever did! Awesome job on smoking. I did a lot of research and for me this one has more features than the others for less money. It's not a clone of anything.
who did you purchased the smoker from?
Thanks for posting this great video. I am having this model delivered Nov 30 and my buddy in Chicago is getting his Nov 29. And remember, "always tighten your nuts". Great advice.
I know you said you had no experiance with a smoker so I won't bitch. Have you learned the differance between a smoker and a grill yet? oh and that probe goes into the meat.
Thanks for this video! You did a great job of setup and first cook. Can't wait to see more.
Nice grill thanks for the review, ash try nice feature but it will be a PITA down the road no doubt. Traeger smokers are not as fancy but they just work plus they have a 3 year warranty and fantastic support.
What was causing it to smoke before the pellets ignited?
everything looked pretty delicious! Your going to love cooking on that thing!
