Traeger Pellet Grill and Smoker Initial Firing Instructions
In this video we take you through the 10 initial steps required before using your Traeger Grill for the first time.
Step 1: Remove the porcelain-coated grill grates, grease drain pan, and heat baffle from the inside of the grill.
Step 2: With the switch in the OFF (O) position, plug the power cord into an appropriate grounded electrical outlet.
Step 3: Make sure there are no foreign objects in the auger. Turn the switch ON (I) and the temperature dial to SMOKE. Make sure the auger is turning (inside the pellet hopper).
Step 4: Check that there is air movement from the draft inducer fan by placing your fingers over the firepot. If the hot rod is getting hot, it will turn red. CAUTION! Do not touch the hot rod. Turn the temperature dial to SHUT DOWN CYCLE.
Step 5: Fill the hopper with Traeger Hardwood Pellets and turn the temperature dial to HIGH.
Step 6: When the pellets begin to fall into the firepot, turn the temperature dial to SHUT DOWN CYCLE to reset the hot rod. Then with pellets still in the firepot, turn the temperature dial back to SMOKE.
Step 7: When flames start coming out of the firepot, turn the temperature dial to SHUT DOWN CYCLE and switch to OFF. Let the grill cool down.
Step 8: Now you’re ready to place the heat baffle, grease drain pan,
and porcelain-coated grill grates back into the grill.
Step 9: With the door open, turn the switch ON (I) and the temperature dial to SMOKE. In about 2 minutes, the pellets will ignite and whitish-gray smoke will come out of the grill. After the pellets have ignited, close the door and turn the temperature
dial to any cooking setting desired.
Step 10: Before using your grill for the first time, it will need to be seasoned. Turn the temperature dial to HIGH and let run for 45 minutes with the door closed. This is a great time to grab a six-pack, if you haven’t already.

I was very lucky enough to negotiate one of these for free this is the exact model that I have and I really appreciate this video. Thank you so much for showing this to me I know what to do May your meat be delicious
Awesome! Just got mine for father's day! Thanks for the tip, cheers!!
They show an upper rack, but they don’t come with one. It’s a separate purchase. Nice job Traeger.
Why all these steps
Amazing.
We have used this at least 4 times a week since we received it a month ag MyBest.Kitchen Temperature control is spot-on even on long cooks. We throw a welding blanket over it in the cold and it doesn't burn through pellets. Fantastic smoky flavor and is easy to clean.
Didn’t know it was electric .! Kind of disappointing
Those are some instructions for us I tell ya.
Just picked one up yesterday from Home Depot. Already assembled which made it nice and easy. Video made it even easier!
Thanks for sharing
My pro 22 didn’t come with a grate on the hopper, is that a issue?
Step seven error code. And auger stops I’m going back to charcoal
Legend
So it’s an outdoor electrical oven.
Going to pick on up now I’ll make sure to grab a 6 pack as well since that’s part of the instructions
My kind of dude, a 6pk in 45 minutes!
It's so easy if you follow step-by-step I did it with my Traeger grill just now
My baffle and drain pan were covered in grease when I bought it from the store. Is this normal?
Wow. I thought you could just put the pellets in and turn it on. Sticking to my grill.
So what is the shut down cycle for?
Seems like a lot of steps to do compared to just heat and cook.
Thanks for the vid! I have a smaller model but your directions still applied! Looking forward to smoking ribs today!
What about coating the inside with an oil, like you would do for a smoker? Is that necessary?
Very impressive
Wow wish my grill had the burner in the freaking middle !
The treager I have looks exactly the same
Except my dam burner is all the way on the left
Right next to the pallet dispenser
Do you have to do that every time you want to cook?
Can you just turn it on high as soon as you are ready to cook
Please read!
At the end of step 7, once you turn the dial to Shut Off Cycle. DO NOT TURN THE POWER OFF JUST YET. Let it be in the SOC for 10 MINUTES. Then turn the POWER OFF. Follow the necessary after that. Happy cooking everyone.
Thanks extremely useful. Will certainly share video content with my good friends.
how long do i suppose to leave it at any desired temperature before i put it on High?
Why would you not touch the red hot rod?
Wait, wtf. All those steps just to get the traeger ready to smoke something? Why can’t you turn it on and turn the dial to “smoke”?
Checklist:
-Traeger
-pallets
-6 pack lol
I hate the damn thing
The wife wasted a thousand dollars!!
I love everything about this grill!>>>t.co/y9qe4WTh4K It works exactly as advertised and was very easy to assemble. I’ve smoked several briskets and ribs so far and everything was delicious.*
Do you have to season w the pellets or without?
