    You can substitute thawed frozen ground turkey to make it a little bit cheaper. In a recipe like this substituting ground turkey for ground beef will not really effect the flavor too much especially with those seasonings and maybe a bit of chili powder and powdered garlic. Most people wouldn't even be able to tell unless they were specifically looking for it.

    I love how something so simple can come out looking pretty fancy! Looks like this could be a template for all sorts of good variations, too… use what you have in the house. Are you lacking the elbows? Slap some bowties or rotini in there! Don't like shrooms? You could substitute zucchini or your favorite other squash, I suppose!

    TexMex variation:
    Using envelope of taco season or just chilli powder and hot sauce in place of the Italian seasons
    Stirring in some sour cream after the bake before topping the cheese!
    Using American slices or cheddar.
    Chop and slightly cook (called clarifying) fresh onions and or bell (green red or other) peppers before adding.
