I loved "brown bread" as a child growing up in CA. This was a 1940s food, as my mother was newly-married and had to be one of those thrifty meatless cooks during WWII. She would steam it in the open can in a 1/4" of water in a covered pot. Buttered and served with baked beans? Delicious. I moved to New York in 1993 and couldn't find it anywhere. Odd, since it is a New England tradition. After a couple of years of shopping I had a sudden epiphany. All New York supermarkets are really Italian markets! It explained why other favorite foods were unavailable. If it isn't something that Mama Corleone fed to her family, it is not even in the supermarket computer. I would bring cans home with me from my travels. Finally, our town's A & P closed and was taken over by Acme. I hoped that when I walked into Acme that I would find giant magnets, huge, 10-ton weights, huge, round bombs labeled TNT, coyote-sized crossbows, and strap-on rockets, etc., but was disappointed. What I did find, to my great delight, was B & M Brown Bread! I always keep a can in the house. Open it up, shake out 3" or so, slice, microwave, butter and eat! I refrigerate the rest for my next snack. Acme is a Philadelphia-based chain, and to my further delight, I found three (3) kinds of Scrapple in the refrigerated case! This appeared to be unpopular with all of the Italians, and their offering has dwindled down to one brand. Since both have cornmeal, I treated myself to a fried Scrapple and Brown Bread breakfast. Absolutely delicious.

B&M Canned Bread is delicious, but I can't digest it. Every time it tears up my stomach. I saw you tried the Loma Linda Veja-Links in a video. Except for their canned Burgers and Vegetable Skallops (both of which are only palatable if seasoned and cooked before serving), the Loma Linda brand has a fair amount of really yummy vegetarian potted fake meats. I highly recommend the FriChik and the Saucettes. The Saucettes are awesome if you slice them in half and fry them until crunchy. The FriChik is good fried, baked, soaked in barbecue sauce, or even crumbled up by hand or in a food processor. It oddly works better in, for instance, a spaghetti sauce than the LL canned Vegetarian Burger, which is only palatable to me after you season it with a whole bunch of spices and add breadcrumbs. Why would anyone bother, then? You can feed an army (of vegetarians) with the big cans…
